I recently had a lunch outing with a bunch of pals at Saffron Haveli in Wellington, New Zealand. While the restaurant's setting was pleasant and the service was satisfactory, I found the overall dining experience somewhat underwhelming.
My spouse, child, and I dined at this eatery and had a fantastic time. The flavors of the food were exceptional. Honestly, despite being in New Zealand for two decades, this was the first time I savored such delectable cuisine. The attentive team frequently checked on us, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Kudos to the staff for making us feel right at home. It truly embodied the Indian hospitality spirit, even miles away from our homeland.
Alright, let me start by saying this photo is not my finest moment 😂 We decided to pop in here spontaneously while searching for a spot for dinner, and to our surprise, the place was completely empty on a Saturday evening at 6 pm. It's a spacious spot, and if you're familiar with the old strawberry fare, you'd recognize the layout. The interior decor is charming, and back when I used to work in this area, I frequented this place for lunch. I recall our group visits where everyone always enjoyed the food, and we practically made it a weekly tradition! However, one consistent memory was the lack of staff at the counter upon our arrival. After a few minutes, a gentleman would rush out from the kitchen to greet us, seat us, then disappear. Later, we'd receive menus and water, only for him to vanish again - perhaps to answer the phone or attend to an Uber Eats driver picking up orders. It felt like a one-man show in that large space; wouldn't be surprised if he was also the sole cook in the kitchen 😂😂 Moving on, I ordered my all-time favorite chicken rahra, a dish I always debated between that and the chicken Balti, which I also adored. (I recall not being a fan of their tikka masala compared to other places.) The rest of the table went for butter chicken and saag, but they couldn't resist trying a bit of my rahra and all praised its deliciousness! If memory serves me right, their lunch deal is under $16, making it a great spot for a midday meal. If you're in the area, definitely give them a shot - it's been my go-to for years for a reason!
